Legend of the Unicorn (1985)

for Bb Clarinet Trio

PROGRAM NOTES

Legend of the Unicorn (for Clarinet Trio) represents studies in counterpoint and melodic weaving using the limitations of only three instruments, in this case three B flat clarinets.  Some individuals feel that the clarinet has three distinctive ranges each with differing tone qualities.  This provided Cichy with a wider range of timbres to employ in this composition.

Legend of the Unicorn is rhythmically straightforward but interchanges two melodic ideas (one spirited and animated, and the other lyrical and flowing) from one style to the other.  Both melodies are stated in their entirety in the beginning of the piece before being transposed, fragmented, sequenced, and even stated in a short fugue.  The piece closes by drawing from the intervals used in the opening statement at the beginning of the piece and played in a very slow, reflective style hinting at the demise of the unicorn.
